About This Spot

Stepping inside Dawson Diner—once known as Sweet G's—you’re gently welcomed into a quietly familiar space that feels like a moment paused in the heart of Thunder Bay. There’s a calm rhythm here, where the pace slows just enough to sink into the comfort of a local diner while still moving along with the hum of good conversation and friendly greetings. The recent refresh of the interior brings a fresh, clean look without erasing the warmth of a space where people return time and again.

The atmosphere is unpretentious but thoughtfully cared for, with staff who know the balance between attentive service and making you feel at home. Whether you arrive early for a Finnish pancake breakfast that feels like a soft embrace or settle in for a plate piled high with familiar favorites, there’s a reassuring ease to the moment. The menu flows through hearty breakfast options, interesting specialty sandwiches, and comforting soups, offering both classic choices and unexpected delights, like a splash of Finnish heritage or a touch of spice from a Mexican omelette.

It’s the kind of spot where you might find yourself enjoying a well-cooked steak that hits just the right note or savoring a fresh salad that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate. The experience here is quietly dependable—each meal arriving with care, a touch of local kindness, and a spirit of inclusion that feels especially rare. You won’t find flashy pizazz or overt fanfare; instead, it’s the steady pleasure of a place where community and good food intersect, making it a subtle yet meaningful discovery for anyone in search of honest, welcoming dining in Thunder Bay.

The perfect little diner. It has a wide variety of menu items, low-key vibes, and fantastic service every time. Plus, look at this aesthetically pleasing salad.

I highly recommend this kitchen to anyone. I had a steak and it was well-done. Of all places besides The Keg, it’s difficult to get a well cooked steak, and this place does an excellent job. I had my steak well-done and it was thoroughly cook and “SOFT”. I love it here. The ladies are amazingly friendly. And it was recently renovated, so it’s beautiful.

Great food I had the lumberjack breakfast. Forgot to get picture of the meal but here’s my empty plate. Will be back again. The service was great friendly staff and only waited about 10 mins for our order.

Nice, clean, fresh looking restaurant. Friendly hostess, good selections and overall, good food presentation. However, the icewater smelled and tasted like sulphur. The waitress informed me that it was well-water and offered a bottled water instead. I just stuck with the coffee. The meal looked great, but once I started cutting into the eggs, I realized they were cooked "over-hard," rather than "over-medium," as requested. The waitress came by to ask how everything was, and I explained that the eggs were overcooked. I had just cut into the 1st egg. Her response was basically, I'm sorry, and walked away. Rather than giving me the option to have them re-cooked, nothing further was done about it. Why even bother asking the customer how their food is, if you can't be bothered to rectify the mistake, or make an adjustment on the final bill? Overall the food was good and I'd probably go back if I'm in town. However, when a server is expecting a $4+ tip on $25, for 5 minutes of work, perhaps you could try to "serve" the customer 1st.

Oh my ! We both had clubhouse sandwiches on rye for lunch. One Greece salad side and one sweet potato fry. These lunches looked good and were very tasty . We NEEDED desert . Lol One blueberry and one cherry pie. Listen, we'll stop here without hesitation. It's clean , fresh and modern . Our server, Linda was a seasoned professional. Thanks
